Migration and trauma

Experiences of war and displacement often have a profound impact: they can be so overwhelming that the victims simply cannot cope, and the effects sometimes last many years. Early professional support can help individuals to cope with the trauma.

Trauma: information for refugees and carers

Experiences of war and displacement often have a profound impact on the victims. About half of all adult refugees in western countries suffer from post-traumatic stress disorders. But children and teenagers are also affected.

Symptoms might only appear some time afterwards; for example once the individual’s immediate needs, such as accommodation and food, have been met.

Everyone who comes into contact with refugees can help out. It’s important to provide them with a sense of security and stability in the here and now so that they feel as protected and safe as possible.
